It always astounds me that people flee places like New York and California and export their particular brand of crazy to other states. Like a South Park episode, they seek to turn their new homes into something like their old homes, which they left because it got too hard to make a living and live decently.
Denver, Phoenix, Northern Virginia - I'm looking at you.
But there is something to be learned - and that's the futility of single party rule when that party is the Democrats. Name a failing city and a failing state in the country, and it's run entirely by...Democrats.
Find a cesspool of corruption feeding of union contracts and old political bloodlines, and you have a state controlled by...Democrats.
Looking at the map of every election in recent memory, you see that Democrats control all of the urban areas, and with the higher population densities, use it to take states (PA, IL, WI, CA).
Our only hope is that one day, someone looks around and says - everytime you Democrats get control, you f*** everything up! Thank goodness we have 55 Democrat Senators (and two independents and one fraud), a Democratic House, and a Democratic president. At least now we can spread the misery around.
The one time you can point to success with Democrats was 1994-2000. Clinton held the White House and got credit for the business friendly, deficit lowering Republican Congresses. Are there other examples where Democrats ran a state entirely and good things happened? Anyone?

it's almost like shooting fish in a barrel. Go here http://map.measureofamerica.org/maps.aspx
again and again and again, where is the quality of life higher? It's not in Alabama and it's not in Missouri.

Ruth,
I think you need to improve your aim. Go back and read through the purpose of that report, the methods, and how it's applied to developing countries.
Compare that with real data like the fact that California is experiencing a net migration loss.
Also consider the factors that go into a study like this, one that compares relatively homogeneous populations with those of the United States, who bring in large number of poor immigrants (skewing results downward).
What you'll find is that googling for data or reading self-congratulatory praise for living in a blue state isn't an effective substitute for substantive debate.
People voting with the feet is a pretty good indicator of how they feel about where they live. As budgets fail in large states dependent on the wealthy, the trend will only get more pronounced.
In the meantime - make sure you have a permit for that gun - if you're living in a blue state, there are severe restrictions on your right to shoot, even into a barrel.

My memory ain't so good, but I seem to remember pretty good times under the leadership of Mel Carnahan.
