Anonymity is not a right online. It's a privilege. No one is truly anonymous, but most of us try to respect boundaries, especially when it comes to politics. At the same time, when you make nasty personal attacks and try to hide behind anonymity, you've broken the rules, and you can be sure I'll catch you.
For example, the nasty, bordering on libelous StlPushBack blog is actually written by leftwing activist Adam Shriver. Adam is one of those incredibly annoying progressive academic hacks who have nothing to lose in life, so they spend their days trying to make the rest of us miserable. Get this - he's a philosopher. And one who spends his days pondering about how animals feel when they are chopped up into tasty burgers and steaks. Yeah - he's exactly what you think. Lacking any social or economic utility, he spends his days whining about not being influential. Here he is complaining about SharpElbows crashing the HCAN Astroturf party.
Charming fellow, no?
Unfortunately, like a nest of cockroaches that never seem to be eradicated, he's entrenched over at Wash U with a slew of other hard core lefties. They feel secure in their jobs at an academic institution, and so they feel free to come out and attack Tea Party organizers. Envious that we make a difference, they attempt to use personal attacks and slurs to damage our reputation. Failing entirely to make substantive arguments on healthcare or and unwilling to engage in healthy debate, they immediately turn to using sexual slurs and cries of racism at every opportunity (even though they are all white).
Lucky for us, a degree in philosophy doesn't require any special computer training. Everyone has a signature online, and if you're going to create an anonymous blog and Twitter account with which to attack your betters, maybe you should learn to cover your tracks.
As you can see - this blog template is a false start. The date is the exact same one as the first post on the StlPushBack blog that Adam writes. Realizing that the default settings posted his name as author, Adam started over. But he didn't clear the page. Oops. Adam just outed himself as the author of Stl Pushes Back.
I haven't linked to the blog, in order to not give it traffic or ranking, but it's sufficiently vile and childish that those reading will have no problem recognizing Adam's signature lack of civility or decency. What's really bad about this is Adam has another blog, the Stl Activist Hub, where he accuses me of stalking him. That's tough to do when I've blocked him from my Twitter feeds, ignored his site after our domain prank, and avoided contact with him through email. At the HCAN event, I did go up to Adam and "hotflash" to cool down tensions. It's considerably more difficult to attack people you've met face to face, and I was hoping they were decent enough to recognize that disagreements in politics didn't have to lead to personal animosity. Adam's response was to allege that I was stalking him. Considering that we now know that he has been obsessively following the Tea Party organizers since August 13th, and trying to assassinate their character anonymously, we can clearly determine that Adam's desire for the spotlight leads him to flights of fancy about his significance in the world and a serious case of projection.
But I will remind Adam of this. His attacks on the St Louis Tea Party have grown increasingly vitriolic, and now that we are clear that he is the source of the attacks, he should make sure he thinks carefully about what he is doing. I warned Eric Hoffpauir of ShowMeProgress several months ago about being a voice of reason when this got ugly. I warned him that high passions led to poor decisions, and offered to stand up with him and denounce anyone who made personal attacks on people, their businesses, and their families. Eric is the "person I know" Adam references in describing our conversation. I had that conversation with Eric because the left believes the personal is political, and there are numerous examples of left wing bloggers posting personal addresses, pictures, and even making threats to children and family of conservatives online. Considering the mail, phone calls, and even visits to the homes of Tea Party organizers we have already received, I wanted to reach out to what seemed to be a reasonable person to work to prevent those kinds of attacks and maintain some aura of civility. Eric scoffed at the idea.
So what happens when I go to Adam Shriver in person? He records the event, cuts the video to 23 seconds, and pretends I'm threatening them. What makes it even sadder is he is StlPushBack, and knew exactly what I was saying. In posting a video of me discussing StlPushBack on StlActivistHub, he is deliberately misleading his readers with information designed to smear my character. His accusations of stalking turn out to be a manufactured story where he was in possession of all the facts, yet he still chose to lie about it to try to paint me as a stalker. How can anyone trust anything he ever writes again?
My goal with 24thstate was to expose government corruption and discuss Missouri politics, not out inconsequential leftwing bloggers. But when they decide to attack fundamentally decent people like Dana Loesch, Gateway Pundit, and Bill Hennessy with untrue and malicious smears against their character, the gloves come off. I'm a big boy, and am not worried about what he writes about me, but you don't get to attack my friends and expect me to remain quiet.
You do not get to hide when you're an asshole. You do not get to pretend to be reasonable on one website when you're trying to attack people on the other. You don't get to let other people do your dirty work and then wonder why you get outed. And while we're at it, you should take note that creating fake accounts with which to harrass other online users is now explicitly covered under the Missouri Cyber Bullying Law. From chatting with legal types, I can tell you there is a world of difference between writing your opinion, and creating a fake site to smear other people.

I also tried to bring a little bit of civility to the situation at the hcan rally. I shook his hand and asked him his name (he would only tell me his first name). I said "Just because we disagree doesn't mean we cant be friendly." Clearly thats not how he rolls.

Too bad. I believe that philosophy really is one of the most important activities man can undertake. But much of what it has become in the modern world is the sort of ridiculous silliness that could only exist in a closed system cut off from reality.

"The ends justify the means"
is not a philosophy...
It is a philandering,
a facade behind which
feral reasoning seeks
the phenomenon
of fanfare.
There is
JOY
in Philosophy
and Adam is Eden-less
