Instapundit links this little piece in Politico on the retirement of two Senate Democrats and two dropouts by Democratic governors scheduled for today.
The Politico calls up veteran Democratic political consultant Roy Temple to get his take on the affair, counting on keen insight brought to you by one of the capitol's best minds.
But this is what we get.
“It’s not good news for Democrats,” said Roy Temple, a Democratic strategist. “The reality is this is going to be challenging year, and this is an additional challenge you would prefer not to have. Because of the success of the last two cycles, there are a lot of seats to defend. This is just an additional complication.”
...um, Roy? Chris Dodd and Byron Dorgan were elected in 2004. They were safe seats in the midst of a Republican wave that netted 55 seats in the Senate. The elections you are talking about happened in 2006 and 2008. The seats you have to defend this year are open seats and seats that were safe enough to win in 2004.
I bring this up for your own good, because your quote in the Politico makes no sense. It's like you were reading from the wrong crib sheet. Or it could be you're so full of it that you don't know what's going and just say whatever comes to the top of your head because you're happy to get in the news somehow, someway.
I was under the impression that Roy Temple was this uber-political guru. Now my tender little bears spirits have been crushed, as another cherished Missouri political myth fails us. It's enough to make you think that maybe Russ isn't the dumbest Missourian in Washington. But that's not fair - Roy isn't dumb - he just doesn't have anything useful to offer, anymore.
