The conservative effort to defund Obamacare is well underway, but establishment Republicans have been hostile to the initiative every step of the way. Heritage Action, the political arm of the Heritage Foundation, has sponsored a Defund Tour to promote these efforts. The two week, nine city tour targets some of the areas of the country with Republicans lacking in conservatism. Check out this video:
The first commitment to defund involves co-sponsoring the Defund Obamacare Acts. Rep. Tom Graves (GA) has the US House version & Sen. Ted Cruz (TX) has the US Senate version. However, those acts are as meaningless as the 30+ Repeal Obamacare votes if they are not connected to an appropriation. The next opportunity will be with the Continuing Resolution (CR) when Congress returns from the August recess.
The second commitment to defund involves signing the letters which outline the strategy of tying the Defund Obamacare Acts to the CR. Rep. Mark Meadows (NC) has the US House version & Sen. Mike Lee (UT) has the US Senate version. Members of Congress that have not signed onto the letters, or publically committed to the effort, are not serious about ridding this country of Obamacare, despite the fact that Republicans have used their opposition to Obamacare to win elections since 2010. Now that we have a real opportunity to stop Obamacare where have all the Republicans gone?
In Missouri, only Sam Graves (MO-6) & Jason Smith (MO-8) have signed onto the effort...pretty sad for a state that passed Prop C by 71%. They should be applauded for supporting the defund effort. Your efforts are needed to pressure the rest of the Missouri delegation. And while your at it, use the Heritage Action Scorecard for some additional support.
You will probably encounter many excuses while pressuring your members of Congress. Here are some articles to aid your efforts:
